“One of the hopes for the future of opera” Malaga Hoy - Spain
Dramatic Tenor Kendrick Jacocks came to center stage overnight in the tenor repertoire’s most demanding role, Verdi’s Otello, after having sung endless tours of Porgy and Bess. The switch seemed natural for Kendrick. It all started when the then 19 year old got his first small role and contract with Opera Memphis in 1991. The ups and downs that followed brought him to his most recent successes as Otello at the Municipal Auditorium, Torremolinos Spain, where an astute histrionic ability and dynamic vocalism left audiences dazed, particularly during the last act. His ability to merge drama and music had been recognized much earlier. After a performance of Carmina Burana 1995, conducted by Maestro Paul Vermel, a critic wrote “Mr. Jacocks infused his role with theatrics and fine voice.” New Gazette, Champaign-Urbana. The artist has since performed with many opera houses and presenters including Connecticut Grand Opera, Champaign-Urbana Symphony, Beethoven Club Orchestra, New York City Opera, Ian Hobson’s Sinfonia da Camera, Opera Memphis, Living Arts Inc, Concerlirica International of Spain and at festivals and locations; Wolf Trap, Washington, DC, Mann Center for Performing Arts Philadelphia, New York State Theater Lincoln Center, The Orpheum Memphis, the restored Municipal Auditorium Torremolinos, among many others in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Ukraine, Germany and Spain. Next year he performs Narraboth in Strauss’ Salome, Pollione in Norma, and more of Verdi’s Otello. Though self-taught, Kendrick has been guided by some of the world’s finest singers and pedagogues among them are Virginia Zeani, Mignon Dunn, Martina Arroyo, John Wustmann, and Grace Bumbry. In March 2002, he appeared with New York City Opera in Porgy and Bess, which was televised nationwide Live from Lincoln Center in that famous production, which won an Emmy Award, a Tony Award and a Grammy nomination. Bravo Kendrick!
